tl;dr
K9 Vitals is a mobile app designed for professional working dog handlers. The app aims to solve the challenges of manual data logging and performance analysis by providing a centralized system for tracking training sessions.
Core features:
Real-time trail recording with integrated environmental data like weather and elevation.
Comprehensive training details logging, including performance ratings and qualitative feedback.
Detailed dog profiles to manage training history, health metrics, and certifications.
Multi-format data sharing for easy reporting and collaboration with stakeholders.
K9 Vitals is a mobile application meticulously designed to empower professional K9 handlers and dog trainers by streamlining the management, tracking, and analysis of working dog training sessions.
Professional working dog training is a rigorous and data-intensive process. K9 handlers often face significant challenges in:
Manual Data Logging: Relying on paper logbooks or disparate digital tools for tracking intricate training details (e.g., environmental conditions, scent articles, dog performance) is inefficient and prone to errors.
Performance Analysis: Without a centralized system, identifying trends, assessing progress, and pinpointing areas for improvement across numerous training sessions and multiple dogs is incredibly difficult.
Stakeholder Communication: Sharing comprehensive and digestible training records with team members, supervisors, or certification bodies in a standardized format can be cumbersome.
Environmental Context: Understanding how varying weather, terrain, and other environmental factors impact a dog's performance is critical, yet often not systematically captured.
These challenges collectively hinder training efficiency, obscure insights, and complicate the continuous development of highly skilled working dogs.
To design an intuitive, robust, and comprehensive mobile application that provides professional K9 trainers with a seamless way to record, analyze, and share critical training data, ultimately optimizing the performance and development of working dogs.
To deeply understand the unique needs and workflows of professional K9 trainers, my research focused on uncovering their current practices, pain points, and aspirations.
Professional K9 handlers (e.g., law enforcement, military, search & rescue)
Specialized dog trainers (e.g., medical service, drug detection, cadaver)
Individuals managing multiple working dogs and their training regimens.
Interviews: Conducted in-depth interviews with four experienced K9 trainers and handlers to gather qualitative insights into their day-to-day operations, existing tracking methods, and specific challenges.
Competitive Analysis: I analyzed existing digital (The Mantrailing) App and analog solutions used for tracking dog training or general outdoor activities, identifying current gaps and opportunities for innovation in the K9 training niche.
"Trainers need to meticulously track environmental conditions for accurate analysis of scent work."
"Detailed dog profiles with training history are crucial for long-term development and health monitoring."
"Sharing training data in various formats is essential for reporting and collaboration."
"Ease of recording a trail and tracking dog movement in real-time is paramount during training."
"The ability to rate and add comments on performance is critical for qualitative feedback."
Holistic Data Capture is Essential: Trainers require the ability to log a wide array of data beyond just duration and distance, including environmental conditions (temperature, wind, air pressure), specific training focus (search & rescue, obedience), scent articles used, and qualitative performance ratings.
Longitudinal Tracking Matters: A centralized record of each dog’s training history, health metrics (e.g., body temperature, heart rate from paired devices), and certifications is vital for long-term development and maintenance.
Flexible Data Export is Crucial: The need to share detailed training reports in various formats (e.g., GPX for mapping, PDF for official reports, direct links for quick sharing) with different stakeholders is paramount.
Streamlined Workflow: During active training, the interface needs to be minimal and easy to interact with, allowing trainers to focus on their dog while still recording vital information.
I began by mapping out critical user flows to ensure a logical and intuitive progression through the app. A core flow, such as "Recording a New Training Session," highlighted the interconnectedness of map tracking, data input, and saving/sharing.
Integrated Environmental Data on Trail Recording:
Decision: Directly display live weather data (temperature, wind direction/speed, humidity, air pressure) and elevation on the "Trails Page" and "Trail Details" screens.
Rationale: User interviews revealed that environmental factors critically impact scent work and physical exertion. Presenting this data contextually on the map and within the session details provides trainers with immediate, actionable insights to better understand and replicate training conditions.
Comprehensive & Customizable Dog Profiles:
Decision: Develop rich "Dog Profile Pages" that include not only basic information but also specific training specializations, linked certifications/awards, and a clear "Next Training" date. The "Dog List Page" provides quick overview summaries.
Rationale: Trainers manage multiple dogs, often with distinct roles (e.g., Medical Service, Search & Rescue). A detailed, easily navigable profile ensures all critical information for each dog is centrally located, supporting long-term development plans and health monitoring.
Flexible Training Data Export:
Decision: Implement a dedicated "Share" modal within the "Training Details" page, offering multiple export formats: GPX (for mapping software), PDF (for reports), and a shareable Link.
Rationale: Different stakeholders require data in varying formats. Providing these options directly within the app empowers trainers to easily compile reports for compliance, share routes with team members, or quickly send an overview to a client, enhancing collaboration and reducing administrative burden.
Initial wireframes allowed me to work with Figma AI to quickly sketch out layout ideas and information architecture.
K9 Vitals offers a suite of features designed to support the complete lifecycle of working dog training.
Integrated Weather Data: Based on user feedback, real-time weather and elevation data were crucial for understanding scent dispersion and physical exertion during training. We integrated this directly into the 'Trails Page' to provide immediate context.
Real-time Trail Recording & Mapping: Track dog's movement on an interactive map, including distance, duration, and deviation. Intuitive Record/pause/resume/finish controls allow seamless session management.
Comprehensive Training Details: Log and review extensive data for each session, from general details (dog name, area, starting point, duration, distance) to specific training parameters (focus, blind, main/backup trainers, scent articles), and environmental conditions.
Performance Rating & Feedback: Qualitatively assess each training session with star ratings for motivation and teamwork, along with dedicated comment sections for detailed observations. This is complemented by quantifiable metrics like "Peak Body Temperature" and "Bite Count" where applicable.
Multi-Format Data Sharing: Implement multiple sharing formats (GPX, PDF, Link) directly within the 'Training Details' page, giving trainers control over how they disseminate information.
Centralized K9 Profiles: Maintain detailed profiles for all working dogs, including their specialization, vitals (age, sex, breed, weight), linked paired device data (battery, body temp, heart rate), and a visual history of awards/certifications, allowing trainers to track specific attributes relevant to different working dogs, e.g. medical service dogs, search & rescue dogs, or drug detection dogs.
User Profile & Account Management: Personalize trainer profiles with bios and certifications. Manage account settings including notifications, paired devices, subscription, and a convenient dark mode toggle.
